Ebola fears in Nigeria have heightened after two more people tested positive, despite having no contact with the man who brought the virus into the country. The infected people are spouses of a man and woman who had contact with Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American who died in July after flying into Abuja and infecting 11 others. It comes as blood tests confirmed an Irish engineer who died on Thursday did not have ebola. Dessie Quinn, 43, had been working in Sierra Leone, one of the countries struggling with the current outbreak.

Lagos State government is targeting 10,000 women for its empowerment programme which is to commence on September 1, 2014. Governor Babatunde Fashola, who stated this at the flag off of the programme in Ikeja, yesterday, said registration for the skill acquisition training would begin August 25 in all the local government areas of the state. According to the governor, funding for the vocational/skill training programme is derived from taxes paid by the citizens.

Two American missionaries infected with the deadly Ebola virus were given an experimental drug. Shortly after, Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol were flown separately from Liberia to Atlanta's Emory University Hospital -- the first human patients with Ebola to ever come to the United States. Writebol was released from the hospital Tuesday. On Thursday morning, Brantly walked out of that same hospital with no signs of the virus in his system, doctors say. Their recoveries seem to offer hope for those fighting the largest Ebola outbreak in known history. More than 2,400 people have been infected by the virus, according to the World Health Organization, and it's killed more than half. Famous Nigerian Actress, Ngozi Ezeonu has been designated for a chieftaincy title. The honour will be conferred on her by the Igbo Film Forum (IFF) and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Nollywood (ONN). It was gathered that the Actress will be conferred with the ‘Ezenwanyi Ndigbo Na Nollywood’ title, which literally means ‘queen mother of practitioners of Igbo stock in Nollywood’. According to President General of ONN, Ezeomenani (Dr.) Harris Chuma, choosing Ezeonu for the title is due to her enormous contributions in the propagation, promotion and projection of Igbo culture, and her enthusiasm to duty. Ezeonu, who attended the prestigious Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), will be getting this recognition for the second time. In 2011, she was named as ‘Igbo Cultural Ambassador’ by the ‘’Igbo Bu Igbo’’ Cultural Movement World Wide.

Popular DJ, Jimmy Jatt’s The Industry, has displaced Tuface’s Ascension from the number one spot on the iTunes chart for Nigerian albums. Tokyo (dpa/NAN) – Guinness World Records has certified 111-year-old Japanese as the oldest living man on Earth. Guinness officials on Thursday said Sakari Momoi, a former teacher of agricultural chemistry, became the world’s oldest man following the death in June of a U.S. man of the same age. Dr. Akintayo said on the programme that the Liberian has been kept at the IDH in Lagos and could not confirm if the new case had a contact with late Mr Sawyer or not. More on this later...

Yes, unfortunately it's true. Just confirmed from a family source. Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, the Senior Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist who was one of the doctors who attended to Patrick Sawyer at First Consultant Hospital has died from the Ebola virus which she contracted from Sawyer. Dr. Ameyo died this afternoon Tuesday August 19th at the isolation unit of the Mainland Hospital in Lagos where she'd been quarantined. She died a hero because she was the doctor who refused to let Patrick Sawyer, the man who brought the Ebola virus to Nigeria, leave the First Consultant Hospital in Obalende, Lagos, when he attempted to leave. She saved many lives by doing this. Her death is so heartbreaking.

soldiers At least, 40 soldiers in North-Eastern are refusing to fight Islamist Boko Haram militants until they receive better equipment. The BBC reported on Tuesday that one of the mutineers said that he and 39 others would refuse orders to deploy. The alleged soldier spoke with the BBC just as the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah, warned officers and men of the Nigerian Army to desist from any form of mutiny in the face of the ongoing campaign against the Boko Haram sect. The BBC stated that a defence ministry spokesman said the incident was being investigated. The Federal Government had declared state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states because of the attacks by the Boko Haram sect.

Lagos--One person was yesterday confirmed dead, several others injured, as another passenger boat exploded in Lagos at the weekend. Aside the deceased who was identified as Emmanuel Onu, Vanguard gathered that another passenger of the ill-fated boat was still in coma two days after the explosion. It was gathered that the passengers were coming from Lekki axis of the state before the boat engine exploded at Capital Oil Jetty at Victoria Island. Sources said that aside Onu who died in the explosion, other passengers who sustained varying degrees of injury were immediately rescued and taken to different hospitals in Lagos island.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has so far recovered about N5billion (five billion naira) from persons and organisations in connection with the fuel subsidy scam. Mr. Wilson Uwujaren , Head Media and Publicity in the agency, made this disclosure on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 during a town hall meeting on Fuel Subsidy, organised by Africa Network of Economic and Environment Justice (ANEEJ) in alliance with Justice for All, J4A, at Vines Hotels, Abuja. According to Uwujaren, the EFCC is currently prosecuting 13 different oil subsidy cases; while investigations are on to bring other indicted persons or companies to book. “Investigation and prosecution of fuel subsidy cases have not been too easy for us but we are resolute in our determination to ensure that we push all those cases to logical conclusion”, he said. He emphasized on the importance the Commission places on transparency and corruption in the oil sector.

This probably explains why the Abia State Government has jump-started preparation for the warding away the dreaded ebola pandemic that is sweeping across the nation. Though no outbreak of the disease has been reported within the state, yet the government has put in place measures aimed at tackling the disease when and if it occurs.
