Luis Suarez linked with shock Manchester United move
Manchester United are planning to make a surprise €80million bid for Liverpool's Luis Suarez during the summer transfer window.
Reports in Spanish publication Sport suggest Louis van Gaal is keen on signing last season's Premier League top scorer despite already having fellow countryman Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney at his disposal.
The Dutchman has a number of more pressing areas to address before the start of next season but he is willing to splash the majority of his apparent £150million war chest on Suarez.
Manchester United will have to beat off competition from Real Madrid, who have made Suarez their number one summer target, and will somehow have to convince Liverpool into selling their best player to their main rivals.
Such a deal seems a slim possibility due to the fact Brendan Rodgers is keen on bolstering his options ahead of his side's first season back in the Champions League rather than choose to cash in on his star player.
Suarez, who signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract after flirting with the idea of moving to Arsenal, would also favour a move to Spain over Manchester United - particularly because of his tight-knit relationship with both Rodgers and Liverpool fans alike.
Liverpool are likely to reject any offer from Manchester United for Suarez - even if the Red Devils offered a considerable amount of money for the Uruguayan international.
A first-team player has not transferred between the two north-west sides since 1964 when Phil Chisnall left Manchester United to join Liverpool.
Gabriel Heinze came close to following in Chisnall's footsteps, however Manchester United refused to let the Argentinian defender join Liverpool back in 2007 despite telling the left-back he would be allowed to leave Old Trafford if a club offered £6.8million for him.
