Patoranking VS Oritsefemi Who rules 2015?
The year 2014 will go down in the annals of Nigerian music as
eventful. The average life span of a hit is a maximum of three months
and indeed the year witnessed a plethora of hits. And among the lot who
made 2014 a resounding year for music lovers are self styled Musical
Taliban, Oritsefemi, and new kid on the block, Patoranking. Both are
unarguably among the most sought after acts of 2014. Against the
backdrop of their exploits this year, music pundits here determine which
of them would rule 2015.
PATORANKING
Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie aka Patoranking is a reggae/dancehall singer and songwriter. His journey to stardom was rough as he did several menial jobs to make ends meet. The indigene of Ebonyi State who grew up in Lagos started his music career as a dancer and later went into collaborations with Reggie Rockstone, Konga, Slam and XProject. In 2010, he signed a record deal with K-Solo’s Igberega Records and dropped a single entitled, UP in D Club. Patoranking’s influences include Bob Marley, Buju Banton, Lucky Dube, Fela Kuti, Majek Fashek and Tuface Idibia among others. The musician has bagged numerous nominations and awards including Headies’ Next Rated, Best Reggae/Dancehall and Best Collabo.
ORITSEFEMI
Award winning Double Wahala singer, Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele simply known as Oritsefemi, was born and raised in the ghetto of Ajegunle, Lagos. The indigene of Warri North, Delta State started his musical career right from the primary school. He was a bass guitarist and also lead vocalist at the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ajegunle. A member of the now defunct Junglist, Oritsefemi dropped two albums before going solo in 2006, the same year he released Elewon. According to the musician, growing up on the streets has influenced his sound, which he describes as reality or conscience music. Oritsefemi has four albums to his credit including Flog Politicians, Wicked World, Unfadeable, and Musical Taliban.
…And the people’s verdict:
Patoranking is extra-talented -Desmond Ejike
I give it to Patoranking because he is extra-talented. He stormed the industry in grand and astonishing style and still has a lot in stock. 2015 belongs to him.
He’s rave of the moment -Ndulue Vitus, businessman
Just give it to Patoranking. He is the most raving Nigerian musical act at the moment. I just love the guy and I wish him the best of luck in his chosen career.
Double Wahala will rule 2015 -Seun Adeleye
I’ll root for Oritsefemi because of his Double Wahala. I believe the song will still make a big hit in 2015. But I must add that the way Patoranking is going, he is not a pushover; he will remain relevant for a very long time.
Pray for Oritsefemi -Seun George O, coach
Whoever loves Oritsefemi should pray for him and advise also him not to let his present fame get into his head. He should rather manage his fame and wealth and start saving for the rainy day instead of showing tendencies suggesting that he is too full of himself. Most people didn’t like what happened the day Avatar, his label, gave him a brand new Range Rover Evogue that he later crashed! The security around him on that day was intimidating and people were forced to ask if the man who had been suffering all his life has suddenly become afraid of everybody, including his fans, all in the name of fame.
Both are great artistes -Gab Akinola, auto engineer
They are both great acts. Remember that both of them smiled home with awards at the Headies 2014. It has really been a great year for Oritsefemi and Patoranking no doubt. They have made sacrifices, paid their dues and rose through the ranks in the industry. People look at them now and admire them, and girls throw themselves at them because of their money. But nobody remembers that once upon a time they suffered and toiled every day. But thank God that they saw the light at the end of the tunnel; I’m happy for them.
Patoranking has no rival -Best Chilue, undergraduate
Patoranking has no rival at the moment. If you attended this year’s Headies, you would understand what I’m talking about. He won the Next Rated award, which he rightly deserved. If he could thrash Oritsefemi at the highly rated Headies, is it at Showdown that Patoranking will not fly? If that happens, it is magomago (rigging).
Both of them will rock 2015 -Deji Onatuga, civil servant
I believe that both acts will make serious impact in the music industry in 2015. One thing you have to note is that they play different music styles so their fan base is not the same. But the important thing is that both of them stand tops among emerging musicians in Nigeria. So, I believe that both Partoranking and Oritsefemi will definitely rock 2015.
It’s Patoranking all the way -Annabel Okeke, student
It’s Patoranking, please. You people sometimes ask questions that irritate me. How can you compare Oritsefemi to Patoranking? Patoranking is original but Oritsefemi is more of an opportunist. We are all aware that Double Wahala that gave him fame was copy-copy. Until he wins award with an original song, I’ll not reckon with him.
I prefer Patoranking -Blessing Ogeah, marketing executive
I prefer Patoranking’s songs to Oritsefemi’s. But I’m proud of both of them because they are making our country proud both at home and abroad. I think they need our support in their respective music careers.
Patoranking is amazing! – Somebi Jovita, undergraduate
What I like most about Patoranking is his amazing voice. And the advantage he has over many artistes including Oritsefemi is that he blends with any artiste he is partnering with. His voice is one of the best, if not the best in the Nigerian music industry. I just like the guy and I pray he maintains his present momentum.
Patoranking is more creative -Desmond Odezuo, businessman
For me, Patoranking is more creative and has a bigger fan base. Oritsefemi seems to have better swag but Patoranking has better stage presence. But the two are generally popular in Nigeria at the moment. However, judging from their present works, Patoranking would likely override Oritsefemi in 2015.
Patoranking is sexier -Claire Onanuga, undergraduate
Without mincing words, Patoranking will not only rule 2015 but would also rule my world. Oritsefemi is no match for him! Patoranking is sexier, more talented and a ladies’ man. I’m not saying that Oritsefemi is bad-looking o! Some girls die for people like him but Pato is more flexible both in voice and appearance.
I love Patoranking - Andrea Uduak, civil servant
The only thing that I know about Oritsefemi is Double Wahala, which is a remake of Fela’s song. But Patoranking has been roaring from all corners. Look at the number of collabos he has done. In fact, as far as I’m concerned, Patoranking ruled the outgoing year and will still rule 2015.
Oritsefemi is it! –Hon. Dele Akanbi, entrepreneur
Patoranking is a fantastic artiste but I prefer Oritsefemi. He impressed me a lot with his remix of Fela’s Double Wahala. He did the song so creatively that you can’t resists dancing to the tune or nodding to it even when the environment is not conducive for a dance. I think he should do more because he is a good entertainer.
Patoranking is man of the moment – Kunle Ajayi, computer engineer
Whoever denies the fact that Patoranking is the man of the moment is being mischievous! We should just support him and thank God for his life. After all, his journey to stardom was not rosy at all. So, why not celebrate his crown with him to encourage him and other struggling wannabes. His story is a testimony of hope for the seemingly hopeless in this country and the world over.
Give it to both of them -Christy Chijulu, student
I am not really in support of ceding victory to either of the artistes because it could affect their careers. I think it is better to just highlight their strengths and weaknesses and leave it at that without being judgmental. They play different music styles and each style has its unique features. For instance, Patoranking could smile while performing Girlie O or most of his hit songs. But if Oritsefemi smiles while performing Double Wahala, people may think that something is wrong with him.
Showdown is a nice concept -Jonny Irukah, businessman
Showdown is a nice concept; it is quite commendable. My friend introduced me to it soon after I arrived in the country and it has been making my Saturdays a delight. Can you give Nigerians in the Diaspora access to Showdown by posting it online? That will also enable people to learn more about their favourite artistes.
