Cross River State governor, Mr. Liyel Imoke, has said that after 10 years of remarkable outings, the Carnival Calabar remains the greatest show ever in Africa. He stated this weekend at the Millennium Park while declaring open the 2014 adult Carnival Calabar in Cross River State. Imoke, who was flanked by his wife, Obioma and the state’s PDP governorship candidate, Senator Ben Ayade, also said the annual event has come to stay. According to him “This is 10 years of the Calabar Carnival, the greatest street party ever and the greatest show in Africa.” Speaking earlier, chairman of the state’s Carnival Commission, Mr. Gabe Onah, disclosed that the government has put in place deliberate measures to ensure the sustenance of Carnival Calabar. “Apart from the carnival commission and its structures, there is a band association in view as well as the right political will,” he said.

  Governor Mukhtar Yero of  Kaduna State in northern Nigeria on Tuesday presented the 2015 Appropriation Bill of 203.7 billion Naira to the House of Assembly for approval with Works and Transport taking the lion share of 29.4 billion Naira . Presenting the budget, Governor Yero said the state would generate about 27 billion Naira internally during the year, while internal and external loans during the year would amount to about 60.3 billion Naira. Also in the sectoral allocation, education and health got 20 billion Naira and 12 billion Naira respectively while water Supply got 16 billion Naira and Agriculture seven billion Naira. The budget, tagged ‘Budget of Consolidation and Continuity’, he said, was higher than that of 198 billion Naira presented in 2014.   A Federal High Court sitting in Benin, Edo State, has ruled that prisoners should be able to vote in all national and local elections in Nigeria. The ruling by the Federal High Court comes barely two months to the general elections slated for February 2015. The suit was instituted by Victor Emenuwe, Onome Inaye, Kabiru Abu, Osagie Iyekepolor, Modugu Odion (for and on behalf of inmates of Nigerian prisons), against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Prisons Service. The plaintiffs had asked the court to determine whether having regards to the provisions of section 25 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, the plaintiffs are not entitled to be registered as voters by the 1st Defendants.
