Chelsea must sign Fabregas instead of Khedira
Jose Mourinho, it seems, is intent on signing Real
Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira - a fine player, sure, but not the type
of player Chelsea necessarily need most this summer. And certainly not a player worth an astronomical £36m fee.
Chelsea's interest in the German ace would be slightly more understandable had they not splashed out £21m on Serbia international Nemanja Matic in January. The powerful midfielder has settled back in at Stamford Bridge with consummate ease - and has looked a class act, excellent value for the price Chelsea paid, in every match for the Blues in the second half of this season.
He is the team's rock - and, at the age of 25, will continue be so for at least another six or seven years. Chelsea do not need another midfield enforcer; what they need is a midfield schemer, capable of creating chances from deep, and making sure the ball finds its way from defence through to the team's lethal attacking midfielders and, if Mourinho gets his way, world-class striker.
Khedira's current midfield teammate Luka Modric would be the dream signing. However, the Croatian has established himself as the second name on the team-sheet behind Cristiano Ronaldo at the Bernabeu this season, leaving Chelsea with virtually zero chance of bringing him to Stamford Bridge this summer.
But there is a world-class midfielder over at fierce rivals Barcelona who is both available and willing to move back to the Premier League after this summer's World Cup finals. The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and his former club Arsenal all want to sign him, but why Chelsea haven't been linked with Cesc Fabregas in recent weeks is a mystery.
The bookmakers currently have the Blues as fourth favourites to sign the £45m-rated 27-year-old Spain international, but there have been no suggestions, hints or rumours that Chelsea will make a move for the technically-brilliant midfielder who lit up the Premier League with the Gunners between 2003 and 2011.
Perhaps Mourinho is reluctant to make a bid for Fabregas after being told to 'shut up' by the Barcelona star, whose move to his beloved boyhood club has not worked out in quite the manner he would have envisaged, earlier this season. But the Chelsea boss, in order to leave his team in the best possible shape to win both the Premier League and Champions League titles next season, should let bygones be bygones and start showering Fabregas with love via the media.
Failure to do so will only result in either United, City or Arsenal being strengthened this summer.
