Arsenal to make £3m bid for Ashley Williams following shock talks

Williams is an established Premier League defender.

Arsenal are set to make a £3million swoop for Swansea City star Ashley Williams, as the centre-back has told his club that he isn’t looking to stay there past the summer.
According to the Metro Arsene Wenger has reignited his interest in the defender following talks between Swansea and Williams which resulted in the latter rejecting the offer of a new contract and asking for a move away from the Liberty Stadium. The 29-year-old has been a target of Arsenal’s in the past, but until now had always appeared completely content with life in Wales.

Now however he is preparing to move on as he reaches the twilight of his footballing career, and Wenger is ready to give him the opportunity to contest with the likes of Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen in the heart of his defence. It’s thought that Vermaelen may be on his way out of the club in the coming months, and so Williams’ signature would be an astute addition to the books.
The Swansea star’s current contract is up in 12 months time, but he is said to have told chiefs at his club that he will not pen a new deal after that. This means that the Swans now face the predicament of either consenting to his sale this year, or losing him for nothing once next summer rolls around.
Purchasing Williams would most certainly give Wenger much-needed experience in the back-four, and the presence of a player of his proven Premier League pedigree wouldn't go amiss in the biggest games.
