5 players Chelsea must sign this summer
Chelsea are approaching a summer transfer window of
transition, with Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard both having left the
club. However, this summer is the perfect opportunity to find some
top-quality replacements at Stamford Bridge, along with a brand-new
strike force.
Here are five players that Jose Mourinho should consider signing ahead of the 2014/15 campaign..
.
Filipe Luis
The 28-year-old Brazilian left-back has had a fantastic season with Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid. However, the Blues are rumored to be interested following Ashley Cole’s departure.
He is an ideal replacement too; Luis is quick and can definitely defend. He carries a transfer value of £16m, with Mourinho apparently poised to make an offer of £16.5m.
I think this is a deal likely to happen this summer, and if it does, I look forward to seeing Filipe playing in Chelsea Blue next season.
Paulinho
Another Brazilian with an abundance of talent, Paulinho has played a key part in Tottenham’s midfield this season. However, the 25-year-old has long been linked with Frank Lampard’s spot at the heart of the Chelsea midfield.
Paulinho is a tenacious box to box midfielder, with a great balance of strength and Brazilian energy and flare. He contributed with six goals in his debut Spurs season, and I think he would be a perfect replacement for Lampard, who has not been offered a new contract with the Blues.
However, he is unlikely to leave Spurs for such big rivals for without a substantial price tag. His current market value is just over £14m. Admittedly, the transfer seems fairly unlikely, but Paulinho would be a great signing for Chelsea.
Eliaquim Mangala
Currently billed as one of the world’s best young centre-backs, Frenchman Eliaquim Mangala has already been linked with numerous Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.
The 23-year-old is quick and strong, and has played a crucial role in the Porto back line during this campaign. Mangala has made 42 appearances, contributing two goals and two assists; not bad for a defender. His current transfer value stands at just over £20m.
Mourinho may have a slight advantage in the race for the Frenchman, as he is a legend at Porto, but nothing has happened yet regarding a potential move!
Diego Costa
Chelsea’s marquee signing of this summer’s transfer window looks increasingly likely to be Diego Costa. The Atletico Madrid striker, who has had a phenomenal season; he scored 34 goals, as Atletico clinched their first La Liga title since 1996.
The 25-year-old who now plays for Spain, is the ultimate solution to Chelsea’s attacking problems. He has pace, skill and is incredibly prolific, as this season has shown. As with any great forward, Diego carries a big transfer fee; his current market value just over £30m.
After a fantastic domestic campaign, Costa will now be looking to become one of the stars of this summer’s World Cup, and I look forward to hopefully seeing him at Chelsea for the 2014/15 campaign.
Mario Mandzukic
Following Bayern Munich’s dominant canter to the Bundesliga crown, it seems unlikely that the big, fast Croat forward would consider leaving. However, he would be a brilliant partner for fellow Blues target Diego Costa.
Standing at 1.87m tall, he is somewhat bigger than Costa, and so more of a strong, physical forward, and a great aerial threat. The Croat has also had a prolific season, weighing in with 26 goals and 10 assists, showing he is more than capable of turning provider too.
Currently, this move appears unlikely, but Mario has been linked loosely with the Blues in transfer gossip columns, so watch this space!
